Rehab Residency Program
Our REHAB Residency Program for RN Professionals and New Graduates is a specialized 12-month mentoring program designed to help a registered nurse become an expert practitioner in the acute rehabilitation setting with the ultimate goal of being able to sit for Certified Rehabilitation Registered Nurse (CRRN) certification exam in Rehabilitation Nursing at the end of two years.
The Program
The initial two month clinical orientation to the rehabilitation unit is interdisciplinary in nature and designed to allow the rehabilitation nurse resident to work one on one and under the supervision of a chosen preceptor who is an experienced or senior member of the rehabilitation team.
A structured monthly educational program is planned throughout the remaining ten months to facilitate learning the basic competencies of rehabilitation nursing.
Each topic is structured with objectives, content, and cognitive, affective and psychomotor outcomes. Many of the topics are also accompanied by a CD Rom review of anatomy and physiology, clinical education and guidelines, practice quizzes, pop-up tutors, and tips for working smarter not harder. The modules also include relevant journal articles and practical clinical experience - such as spending time with Physical, Occupational, Speech & Recreational Therapy, attending outpatient therapy clinics and going on therapeutic outings with the patient and interdisciplinary team.
Topics Include
- The Specialty of Rehabilitation Nursing
- Management of Elimination - Bowel and Bladder Function
- Mobility and Immobility Issues
- Rehab of the Stroke Patient
- Communication and Cognitive Dysfunction
- Nutrition and Dysphagia Management
- Rehab of the Spinal Cord Injury Patient
- Rehab of the Brain Injury Patient
- Cardiopulmonary Rehabilitation

The following year allows the rehabilitation nurse resident to practice and internalize the philosophy of rehabilitation nursing as he or she moves along the continuum to expert practitioner in the acute rehabilitation setting.
