Spinal Cord Injury Program

Traumatic Spinal Cord Injuries result from a fall or some kind of accident. It causes damage to the spinal cord and can result in weakness, loss of feeling below where the spinal cord was injured, and/or paralysis.

Non-Traumatic Spinal Cord Injuries result from a stroke and disruption to the spinal cord, tumor on spinal cord, or infection and can result in weakness, loss of feeling below where the spinal cord was injured, and/or paralysis.

Spinal Cord Injury Program Outcomes (January-June 2006)
  • We treated and discharged 49 patients.
  • Our average length of stay was 18.39 days compared to the national and regional averages of 20.31 and 19.49 days respectively.
  • Our FIM score change from admission to discharge was 20.49 which is comparable to the national and regional averages of 19.86 and 20.32 respectively.
  • Our FIM total discharge score was 82.86 which is comparable to the national and regional averages of 82.74 and 83.88 respectively.

Spinal Cord Injury Team Highlights

  • Dr. Terrence Sheehan is board certified in Spinal Cord Injury.
  • Lyndan Simpson, BSN, RN, CRRN and Carolyn Sorensen, MSN, RN, CRRN are both Certified Rehab Registered Nurses.
  • Carolyn Sorensen has 20 years of experience with spinal cord injuries and is a member of the American Association of Spinal Cord Injury Nurses.
  • Karen Whitesell, PT has extensive experience working with spinal cord injury patients.
  • Dr. Sheehan and Carolyn Sorensen are members of the Spinal Cord Consortium.
  • Spinal Cord Injury Support Group meets every month.
