Preparing for Your Stay
An important factor about your stay for in-patient services is that you will be very busy in therapy throughout the day. Our team approach allows us to intensely rehabilitate you and quickly improve the skills you need to return home. The average length of stay is 12 days, with some patients staying as little as 3-5 days and others 30-35 days.
Your length of stay is driven by your diagnosis and how well you participate and progress in therapy. Our success is measured on your functional improvement and getting you back home to the community. Since most of your day will be spent in therapy sessions, comfortable clothes will be needed. Clothes should be machine washable. We suggest all clothing and other belongings be labeled to prevent loss.

Please let your nurse know if you bring hearing aids, dentures, glasses, or contact lenses so that can be documented in your record. If you wear a hearing aid, please bring extra batteries. Please leave any unnecessary items of value at home.
Additional Clothing:
If you are learning to use an orthotic or prosthetic device, bring shorts and short sleeve shirts depending on which limbs are affected. Shoes should have flat heels; a sturdy oxford with laces or sneaker with nonskid soles is preferable. Please ask your therapist before buying new shoes.
Electrical Appliances:
If you bring an electric razor, radio or other electrical items, please tell your nurse, who will arrange for those items to be checked for safety. Even though we take every precaution to prevent loss, the hospital cannot be held liable for lost or stolen items.
Valuables:
We advise you to keep no more than $5 on hand at any time. If you will be attending a community outing, you will be advised on any monies needed. We also ask that you not keep any valuables in your room. The hospital is not responsible for lost or stolen items.
Medication:
It is our policy that all medications for our patients are supplied by our pharmacy. We request that you do not bring any medications from home. If you do bring medications, notify your nurse at once.
Rooms:
Rockville: A very unique aspect of our Rockville location is our patient rooms. Although our rooms are semi-private, the beds are toe-to-toe, which means each bed has a window and much more privacy than a typical hospital room. Each room is also equipped with a closet and drawers to store your personal belongings, an individually controlled heating/air conditioning unit, as well as a television and telephone for each individual patient. There is a separate large handicapped-accessible bathroom with a sink inside, as well as an additional sink outside of the bathroom.
Takoma park: Unit 5200 is one of the more recently remodeled units within Washington Adventist Hospital . Each room is equipped with a closet and drawers to store your personal belongings, as well as a television and telephone for each individual patient. There is a bathroom, sink, and heating/air conditioning unit for each room.
